Attitudes toward and acceptance of the act vary widely depending upon the specific country, culture, and individual preferences. One common criticism of this act is that it objectifies the receiving partner. It can also be seen as an expression of domination and submission and erotic humiliation. Helen Gurley Brown, former editor-in-chief of women's magazine Cosmopolitan suggested that there were positive effects from the facial: "Spread semen over your face, probably full of protein as sperm can eventually become babies. Makes a fine mask—and he'll be pleased."

In heterosexual pornography, the facial is an accepted convention used to end a scene (also known as a "money shot"). This was traditionally done to show that an actual sexual act had occurred.
